Siblings and Diabetes
Having a child with type 1 diabetes comes with so many challenges, and one of the hardest parts for me as a mom is balancing my time and attention between both of my kids. My daughter, Maybel, is 4 and has type 1 diabetes, which naturally requires a lot of time and care. On the other hand, my son Magnus is 5, and while he doesn’t have any major health issues, I worry that he might feel like he’s not getting as much attention. If you’re in a similar situation, you probably und

The Midnight Battle: Our Life with Type 1 Diabetes
There’s a special kind of exhaustion that comes with managing a child with type 1 diabetes. My daughter, Maybel, was diagnosed at just 11 months old, and ever since then, sleep has become a rare luxury. She should be sound asleep at only 4 years old, dreaming peacefully through the night. But for us, the quiet hours are anything but restful. Instead of drifting off, I lie in bed listening for the next alarm, waiting for the next moment I’ll need to spring into action. The nig

School and Diabetes
It's back to school time and it's at times like these that I feel more thankful than ever to be able to stay at home with my kids. We started homeschooling last year when Magnus was 4 and Maybel was 3. We decided that due to Maybel's medical needs, homeschooling would make it much less stressful for everyone. We have many more reasons why we homeschool, including Maybel’s type one diabetes, which can be difficult to manage, and our overall dissatisfaction with government-regu

The Supplies
After Maybel was diagnosed we had to put in some serious effort to find products and ideas to help us live a more normal functioning life. It seems easy but it was a lot of trial and error! Once I found the products I felt were best for her care, I created a spreadsheet to house it all. Even if you are not techy, but someone in your family has medical needs, I highly recommend listing all your supplies in one place. I made a spreadsheet listing all her non-prescription and al

You are the light
During our stay at UVM, we had to learn what type one diabetes was, how to manage it, and all the ins and outs. We had to learn how to care for our 11-month-old daughter and this life-altering diagnosis before leaving the hospital. We had to learn how to supplement an organ. Fake pancreas. Nooo pressure....... Looking back, now, it all feels like a blur. Days were running together. Multiple education sessions, multiple nurses and faces. Trying to catch up on sleep, not feel

The Diagnosis
When Maybel was 11 months old, she got really, really sick. We visited our pediatrician 4 days in a row. Continued to check all the things, typical for her age, and for things going around at this time. Covid had made a comeback but we were in the clear. After cranking her full of fluids, smoothies, juice, Pedisure, Pedialyte, anything and everything we could get her to drink, she just looked like a zombie. I mean sitting at the dinner table looking like she was going to pass

Babies
Brett and I got married in Indiana in 2015. We shipped off to Vermont a few months later with plans to return to Indiana for a “real” wedding and reception in 2016. We found out we were pregnant with our first son Hudson shortly before shipping off to Vermont. When we left Indiana everything was looking great. We had a 30-day lapse in insurance due to the move but got established with an OB and Midwife team close to our home. Our very first appointment in Vermont was beyond d
